1st - The Los Angeles May Day mêlée occurs, in which the Los Angeles Police Department's response to a May Day pro-immigration rally become a matter of controversy.
3rd - British girl Madeleine McCann disappears from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal.
4th - Greensburg, Kansas is almost completely destroyed by a 1.7m wide EF-5 tornado.
4th - The Scottish National Party wins the Scottish general election and becomes the largest party in the Scottish Parliament for the first time ever.
5th - Kenya Airways Flight KQ 507 crashes in Cameroon.
7th - The tomb of Herod the Great is discovered.
8th - A new Northern Ireland Executive is formed under the leadership of Ian Paisley of the Democratic Unionist Party as First Minister and Martin McGuinness of Sinn Féin as Deputy First Minister.
11th - Pope Benedict XVI canonizes the first Brazilian-born saint, Frei Galvão.
12th - 2007 Karachi riots , which killed over 50 people in Karachi and above 100 injured, on the arrival of Chief Justice of Pakistan; Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in Karachi city.
13th - Construction of the Calafat-Vidin Bridge between Romania and Bulgaria begins.
13th - Republic Protests in Turkey.
16th - Alex Salmond is elected First Minister of Scotland. He is the first Scottish National Party leader to be elected as First Minister after winning a historic victory at the Scottish general election on the 3rd May.
17th - Trains from North and South Korea cross the 38th Parallel in a test-run agreed by both governments. This is the first time that trains have crossed the Demilitarized Zone since 1953.
21st - The Cutty Sark is badly damaged by fire in London, England. She is the last surviving clipper.
25th - The Ostankino Tower in Moscow catches fire for the second time.
